What oil pulling stands for?

It seems that not everything about oil is bad, as long as we do not use it for frying. Oil pulling is an ancient method of cleaning the mouth and teeth, used in India by experts in Ayurveda (a Hindu medicine system that uses herbs to treat diseases), and has become a modern practice today.

It uses oil as a rinsing method, with a role in bacterial plaque removal that formed throughout the night in the oral cavity and is practiced in the morning for 10-15 minutes, first thing after waking up, before taking breakfast or brushing our teeth.

What are the benefits of using this method?

You may be wondering why we should use this technique when we can simply use mouthwash... which we knew was killing the bacteria, rught? The truth is that, unlike mouthwash, oil does not break the balance of oral microbial flora and it attracts bacteria, which are covered in a lipid layer.

The oil pulling method is more efficient than the toothpaste, offering an intense teeth whitening after consistent use for several days, but also prevents the appearance of caries, gingivitis and bad breath.

Wow ... all these benefits in one single routine?

A study shows that by rinsing our mouth with coconut oil daily for two weeks, we significantly reduce the volume of bacteria that affects tooth enamel (streptoccocus mutans), so this way we don't stress about frequent tooth decay and getting yellow teeth.

Other research concludes that by oil pulling we reduce the possibility of gingivitis (inflammation of the gums that occurs when the immune system attacks the bacteria in the dental plaque), and the breathing is greatly enhanced, by its high capacity of removing the chemicals produced by the bacteria. Doesn't sound too good, doesn't it?

And if we think that all those harmful bacteria get into our system... we realize that the benefits are much greater, improving the health of the digestive system and of the body as a whole.

Recommendations

If you want to try the method, I advise you to follow the steps :

- Put a tablespoon of oil in the mouth and don't swallow. The best is sesame or coconut oil , to which we can add a few drops of essential oils, such as oregano, a powerful antibacterial oil. Of course, essential oils can be different ... you can use peppermint essential oil, or any other flavor you prefer to make your wait easier;

- Rinse the mouth for 10-15 min with continuous movements (yes, it also helps strengthen the muscles of the face and jaw). It may hurt the cheeks at first, but over time we get used to it. We can spend the 15 minutes doing other things : preparing breakfast, preparing for work, reading, or ... writing articles;

- After this time, throw the oil into the toilet, not into the sink (it can block the pipes). Do not swallow !!!

- Optional, but preferably, is to rinse the mouth with warm salty water (1 teaspoon of salt per 200ml cup of water);

- We brush our teeth and clean the tongue with a spoon or tongue scrapper, in order to remove the bacteria that came at the surface;

We smile :)!
